Is warming your food in the microwave destroying your health?

Microwaves are the world’s most convenient kitchen appliance. They occupy the majority of homes around the world and they are a simple and quick way of cooking and reheating food, especially if you are eating in a hurry.

Have you ever thought whether this metal machine that occupies space on your kitchen surface benefits your body or whether it could be a hindrance to your health! Although I am not going to give you a full science lesson on the microwave, what I will ask is, have you ever wondered why sometimes when you “heat” or “cook” your food in the microwave the outside is boiling hot but the inside is cold, frozen or even sometimes raw.  This is because, without being too scientific, microwaves operate on the water molecules in the foods; the more water in the food, the quicker the appliance emits micro-waves (which is sometimes why foods are heated unevenly). The micro-waves work on the outer layer of the food whilst the inner layers are mostly heated by transferring the heat from the outer layer, which is why the inner layer is sometimes still cold.

Micro-waves are radiation. When you use microwave cooking you are exposing yourself to microwave radiation.

Microwaving changes the structure of the food and the effects the food has on the human body. A study found that broccoli, when microwaved with a little bit of water, loses up to 97% of its beneficial antioxidants. Steamed broccoli only lost 11% or less. The study was published in the November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

A study by Dr. Hans Hertel explored microwaving and found nutrient loss for most foods. So, if you are trying to lose weight or get serious about your health, do not zap the nutrients out of your food for the sake of convenience. Instead of microwaving, be better prepared and stick to steaming and baking to receive the full nutrients from your meals. Exactly what your body deserves!!
